چکیده

Received 7 August 2005 Accepted 5 March 2006 The placenta is unique amongst normal tissues in transcribing numerous different human endogenous retroviruses at high levels. In this study, RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry were used to investigate the expression of syncytin in human trophoblast. Syncytin transcripts were found in first-trimester trophoblast cells with both villous and extravillous phenotypes and also in the JAR and JEG-3 choriocarcinoma cell lines. Syncytin protein was detected in villous trophoblast and in all extravillous trophoblast subpopulations of firstand second-trimester placental tissues. It was also present in ectopic trophoblast from tubal implantations. This study confirms that syncytin is expressed widely by a variety of normal human trophoblast populations, as well as choriocarcinoma cell lines.

Expression of the fusogenic HERV-FRD Env glycoprotein (syncytin 2) in human placenta is restricted to villous cytotrophoblastic cells.

Recently, the expression of a human endogenous retrovirus HERV-FRD, able to encode a fusogenic envelope protein (syncytin 2), has been observed in human placenta. The aim of the present study was to localize the expression of syncytin 2 in first trimester placenta. In addition, we investigated the presence of HERV-FRD transcripts during the in vitro differentiation of isolated villous and extra...

Expression of HERV-W Env glycoprotein (syncytin) in the extravillous trophoblast of first trimester human placenta.

Although the extravillous trophoblastic invasion has a critical role in human placental development, nothing is known about HERV-W expression in the extravillous phenotype. The aim of the present study was to localize in first trimester placenta the expression of HERV-W Env glycoprotein and its receptor all along the differentiation pathway of the extravillous phenotype. In addition using an in...

Human endogenous retrovirus K (HERV-K) is expressed in villous and extravillous cytotrophoblast cells of the human placenta.

Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) have been shown to be important in physiological and pathophysiological processes in humans. Several HERVs have been found to be expressed in the placenta-a tissue with special immunomodulatory functions that is responsible for nutrition of the embryo and the ability of the semiallogenic trophoblast to invade. The envelope proteins of HERV-W (also known as ...

Expression of stathmin, a microtubule regulatory protein, is associated with the migration and differentiation of cultured early trophoblasts.

BACKGROUND The microtubule-destabilizing protein stathmin is expressed by the villous cytotrophoblasts and invasive extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) in the first-trimester human placenta. Here, we evaluated the significance of stathmin expression in terms of the functions of trophoblasts. METHODS We employed two choriocarcinoma cell lines (BeWo and JEG-3), an EVT cell line (HTR-8/SVneo) and i...
